Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) is located on the east coast of the Malay Peninsula. It puts emphasis on research about marine sciences and resources. It is also highly evaluated for its contributions to the international cooperation and the development of oceanography. The university faces the sea; there are easy-to-go fields for fisheries research, such as Bidong Island, Kenuir Lake, and Setiu Wetland. Utilizing the aquaculture facility and research institutions, it conducts various marine and fisheries research.
UMT has concluded MoUs with 18 foreign universities including Nagasaki University and established worldwide cooperative relationships. Owned faculties are Faculty of Fisheries & Food Science, Faculty of Science & Marine Environment, Faculty of Maritime Studies, Faculty of Ocean Engineering Technology & Informatics, and Faculty of Business, Economics & Social Development.
In both fields of marine sciences and fisheries resources, UMT has developed into the internationally leading university. It holds an annual summer school in English, targeting short-term i exchange students.
UMT has already signed academic exchange and cooperation agreement with Ocean University of China and Nagasaki University, and active interactions between those two have been taking place. It is now preparing for the conclusion of the agreement with Pukyoung National University. The systems for supporting students and their interactions will have been established soon.
