About 90 faculty members at Nagasaki University Graduate School of Fisheries and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Fisheries, and Faculty of Environmental Science will practically support students in a careful manner.
The “Nagasaki University Fisheries Museum” is in the Faculty of Fisheries. The museum exhibits the “Glover Atlas (replica),” formulated by Kuraba Tomisaburo and donated to Nagasaki University, rare marine animals’ specimens, and reduced replicas of “Nagasaki Maru” and “Kakuyo Maru,” training ships attached to the Faculty of Fisheries.
This faculty owns some laboratories at Bunkyo Campus and Institute for East China Sea Research (Taira Machi). Research cannot be conducted without our students and exchange students who take the initiative. They share their opinions from various perspectives and scrutinize the research progress with views not distorted by prejudice.
This institute, close to the Shin-Nagasaki fishing port, conducts research on the conservation and restoration of marine ecosystems (environmental conservation science field) and research on marine organisms’ reproduction ability and environmental changes (biological resource production science field). Experiments, practical training, and research by undergraduate and graduate students and seminars are held. The training ships attached to the Faculty of Fisheries, “Nagasaki Maru” and “Kakuyo Maru,” are moored by the harbor in front of the institute. The institute actively interacts with other institutes, such as the nearby Marine Laboratory Nagasaki (Marin-Rabo Nagasaki) and national research institutes.
University Co-operative Association’s (Univ. Co-op) store and cafeteria support campus life. At co-op’s store, you can buy foods like freshly baked bread and lunch boxes (bento), stationery, daily necessities, information appliances, and even Nagasaki University’s original goods.
The cafeteria has various menus such as rice bowls, noodles, and a la carte. The receipt is printed with the calories and nutritional value of the purchased menu, which helps to stay healthy.
University Library has some 592,400 books. There are ICT Support Counter where you can ask questions about computers, “Learning Commons,” the place you can study while talking, and “Library Lounge,” which is suitable for group work and allows you to have a light meal. The library is popular among students thanks to its convenience.
Sumiyoshi, Nakazono Shopping District, where you can get daily necessities in grocery stores, clothing stores, bookstores, drugstores, beauty salons, etc., is nearby the Bunkyo Campus. Since an arcade covers the district, you can walk without an umbrella on rainy days. If you start wondering what to buy in front of various foods, feel free to ask clerks, like “what do you suggest?” or “what would be the best way of cooking this fish?”
